Painting a Playground Slide and Wooden Climbing Frame

Liquid rubber coating on a wooden fence

Painting a wooden playground slide, climbing frame or playhouse requires child-safe paint that won't chip into ingestible flakes, contains no harmful solvents and stays elastic on timber that swells and shrinks. Liquid rubber on a water base meets all three criteria — low VOC, no solvent fumes, elastic film that follows timber movement.

Why traditional paint fails on playground equipment

  • Conventional gloss paint forms a rigid film that cracks within 2 years on outdoor timber — and the cracking flakes are easily picked off by children
  • Oil-based paints contain solvents that off-gas into the play area for weeks after application
  • Cheap fence paint isn't rated for direct skin contact and may contain biocide residues

Why liquid rubber works for play equipment

  • Water-based, solvent-free — low odour, no harmful off-gassing
  • Elastic film stays intact — no cracking, no flakes for children to pick off
  • Abrasion-resistant Class 1 (EN 13300) — survives the rough use playground equipment gets
  • Won't lift around fasteners — bridges micro-movement at screw heads and bolts
  • Cleans with mild detergent — easy to wipe down without damaging the finish

Surface preparation

  • Sand down any loose paint and rough edges — children-safe means no splinters either
  • Brush off dust and sanding debris
  • Repair any cracks in the timber before painting
  • Allow timber to dry fully (3+ days dry weather before paint)

Application

Two coats with brush — work into all corners and joints. First coat slightly thinned for absorption; second coat undiluted for the final film thickness. Allow 28 days full cure before regular play use to ensure complete hardness.

Colour

Bright colours work well on play equipment. RAL 9003 white as base, RAL 3005 cherry red, RAL 5011 dark blue, RAL 6005 green — all available in 1.2 kg tubs for smaller play structures or 3.5 kg for larger climbing frames.
